A new dimension has
been introduced into punitive measures suitable for those found guilty of rape
as International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) called for the castration
of rapists to serve as deterrent to others.
Making the demand, the
Niger State Chairperson of the body, Magistrate Suleiman Takuma, urged the
state’s lawmakers to promulgate a law that would provide for the castration of
rape offenders as minimum punishment, insisting that life imprisonment as
proposed in some quarters was not enough for the crime.
Takuma made the call in
Minna at a workshop on Establishing Sustainable Child Rights Clubs in Schools,
organised by Children Rights Advocacy Guild of Nigeria (CRAGON).
She argued that castration
of men involved in rape was necessary, insisting that most of the minors being
raped were between the ages of one and five years whose womb were permanently
destroyed in the process.
Takuma stressed the need
to step up punishment for rape-related cases to curb increasing cases of rape
in the country, adding that existing laws were too weak to deter offenders.
She argued that situations
whereby men of about 50 to 60 years of age would rape minors was totally
unacceptable and therefore required drastic laws to check such ugly acts.
“We have visited the
speaker of the state House of Assembly for the purpose of putting in place this
law and he has advised us to sensitize the people on such law,” she said.
