A lecturer in the
Department of Animal Science, University of Calabar, Prof. Martins Isika, has
died after presenting his manifesto for the position of the dean of the
institution’s postgraduate school.
The professor was said
to have died at the Senate Chambers of the institution on Friday at about 2pm,
shortly after reading his manifesto to nearly 300 delegates.
Isika, who is in his
50s, became a professor some six months ago.
A source, who is a
medical consultant at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, told our
correspondent on Sunday that the professor might have died of cardiac-related
ailment.
He said, “Isika had just
finished his electioneering campaign and in less than five minutes after addressing
the senate, he slumped and died in his seat.
“The medical doctors at
the event gave him first aid before rushing him to the hospital, but before
they got there he was already dead. Part of the indication was that he was
hypertensive.”
When contacted, the
Public Relations Officer of UNICAL, Mr. Eyo Effiong, confirmed the incident.
He said, “It was a
tragedy that the man should die that way after attaining such height in his
educational pursuit.”
