Following recent seizure of substandard telephones worth millions of naira in the largest African ICT market, Computer Village Ikeja, Lagos, the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON has issued a 7 day ultimatum to mobile phone dealers and importers at the Computer Village to get rid of substandard products or face the full wrath of the law.

Head, Inspectorate and Compliance Department of SON, Mr. Bede Obayi, who read the riot act, while giving the media an update on the raid carried out at the market recently, noted that the ultimatum would take effect from Wednesday last week.
“In view of the unwholesome activities carried out by some unscrupulous dealers and importers of mobile phones at the Lagos Computer Village in Ikeja, bordering on the sale of some fake and substandard mobile phones, SON hereby issues a seven-day ultimatum to those involved and the authorities of the market to get rid of the products or face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
Pennultimate week, the Police in conjunction with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, had clamped down on some mobile phone vendors selling counterfeit mobile devices, particularly those not approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.
Apart from duping unsuspecting Nigerian consumers, these unscrupulous traders are also short changing Original Equipment Manufacturers, OEMs, who have made significant investments to promote their brands.
